I am new to your blog. Just wanted to say it's a wonderful article.

If you can read Russian, you would enjoy to read Lazarevich's duology "Prince of Darkness"-"Lord of Mars", written around 1991.

The first part is actually a short story, and doesn't tell you any much about Mars. But the second part reflects a lot of what you said about the Soviet vision of Mars.

There are better written books, but Lazarevich'es duology has managed to touch some very important nerve.


By the way, speaking of the American sci-fi, I don't see how could you omit Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles"! Meanwhile, here's a Soviet animation for one of the stories from the "Chronicles":
